Mark Farina @ Subculture, 23 Aug

Article by Josh Coppersmith-Heaven | 07 Aug 2008

Mark Farina trips over to Glasgow all the way from The Bay. Whilst reducing diverse artists to generic terms is always difficult, it wouldn't be too cheeky to describe Farina as dabbling in 'psychedelic and experimental house', with bouncy beats. He uses a variety of vocal samples stretched to the edge of recognition, as well as more familiar voices from dancehall and reggae, rap, and funk. Despite this, he eschews the off-beats of funk and hip-hop for the recognisable bass thuds and handclaps of classic house. Whether this is unification or homogenisation is in the ears of the listener, though whether any one of the four hundred people in the seething hot subby will give a damn is an entirely different matter. It's bloody great, forward-thinking house, and that's all that matters. Mr Farina will be supported by the sometimes deep, sometimes bleepy, always excellent residents Harri and Dominic.
