Clubbing Highlights - December 2009

Feature by Chris Duncan | 01 Dec 2009

Former footsoldiers of the drum 'n' bass movement Aquasky appear at Edinburgh's Fake night on 12 Dec, returning after a year locked down in the studio creating fresh and innovative sonic noise since re-assessing their position in the UK dance scene. Their last visit to Edinburgh saw them play to a packed Bongo Club, so expect more of the same when they arrive at Sneaky Pete's this month.

The box fresh Thunder Disco Club makes its third outing at the 250 capacity Lite Bar on 4 December. Move fast to avoid disappointment, especially after our feature on them last month blew their secret little party wide open. Meanwhile, up the road, Velvet celebrate their first birthday at Couture with special guests Audiojack as well as their normal residents.

Popof plays Supernova at the Arches on 4 December, supported by James Harcourt, while Tic Tac Toe welcome Ronnie Muirhead from The Courtyard's success story of the year Sunday Circus.

Back over in Edinburgh the crowd pleasing Jack Beats makes his debut at Bitch at the Cabaret Voltaire on 11 December. Following his Death Disco debut earlier this year, his appearance at Bitch will give the night crawlers of Auld Reekie a chance to hear what all the fuss is about.

Braehead Arena becomes the battleground for this year's Soulwax led party. Taking place on 18 December, Soulwaxmas 2009 features a legion of guests designed to shatter the earth's core, with a live performance by Soulwax and DJ sets by Mixhell, Tiga, 2 Many DJs and local talent such as Johnny Whoop and Hulkblood.

December is a month of notable important birthdays but not many are as exciting as that of Big Foot’s Tea Party. On the 4 December Big Foot’s celebrate a year entertaining our eyes and ears, kicking off the celebrations at the Majestic Laundrette with a private party for friends, headlined by special friend Simon Stokes, making his fourth Big Foot’s appearance this year. Residents Marmalade Man and Faux Pas are then joined by another familiar face in the form of hot property Hans Bouffmyhre as the party moves to the Art School for the main event. The evening’s top draw however is the mighty Lucio Aquilina, fresh off the back of acclaimed sets at Sonar and Cocoon and a string of releases on Trapez, Wordless and Spectral Sounds which are sure to have revellers moving as resident VJ Redux, who’ll have something special up his sleeve, litters the walls with his visual stimulants. On a night with much to choose from, it’ll be well worth catching the “Disco Bus” into town for this one.

Finally, Mixtape present Giles Walker on 18 December at Snafu, while Let It Bleed throw a Christmas party on 20 December with an invite to Dubsided's Switch to take to the bauble covered decks.
