As far as grime goes, there can’t be many more influential DJs than Dean Fullman AKA Slimzee. Co-founder of the mighty Rinse FM, owner of an arsenal of heavily sought-after dubplates, and crucial in promoting the scene from it’s earliest days, Fullman has lived and breathed the music and culture of London’s pirate radio scene since around the turn of the millennium.

Involved in the rooftop-scaling activities that saw producers and DJs in places like Bow and Tower Hamlets broadcasting from makeshift radio studios via dodgy antennas, Fullman once even earned an ASBO for his commitment to the cause. His perseverance has clearly paid off though and grime has went from strength to strength in the subsequent years, with Slimzee’s influence key in propelling the likes of Dizzee Rascal and Wiley to superstardom. Currently hosting the popular Slimzos Sessions on NTS radio, Fullman seems as enthused as ever.

This month he hits Electrikal at the Bongo Club in Edinburgh. Ahead of his set, he runs through 10 tracks to give us a head’s up on the kind of weaponry you can expect on the night. His selection covers favourites old and new, from the garage-rooted sounds of DJ Narrows, through to more rowdy, straight-up grime from the likes of AS.IF KID and Trends. Famed for his access to exclusive ‘VIP’ edits and with an expansive knowledge to draw upon, there can be few better placed to guide you through some of the most distinctive sounds to emerge from the UK scene and give you a tip or two on forthcoming tracks.

DJ Narrows - Saved Souls [Resurrection]

This tune is one of my personal favourites and became the Sidewinder anthem in 2002.

Youngstar/Musical Mob - Pulse X [Musical Mob Royale]

I was dropping this on dubplate in 2002. It’s definitely one of the biggest grime tunes of all time.

Trends - Pump it Up (VIP) [Triangulum]

This tune has been killing my sets on NTS for the last few months and is a popular choice for MCs.

JLSXND7RS - Untitled Dub [Oi! Recordings]

This reminds me of a tune that should have been made in 2002 and MCs love it. It did some serious damage at the Warehouse Project in Manchester.

AS.IF KID - Next Level (VIP) [Unknown]

This one is new and fresh on the grime scene - a personal favourite of mine.

Trends - Ambush [Unknown]

Just started playing this tune, as it’s brand new but already proving to be a big hit. Big up Trends on this one!

Stirling - Voorhees [Forthcoming Slimzos Recordings]

A new beat made by one of my closest friends. This will be a release on my label Slimzos Recordings, for sure - coming out early next year.

Dubzta - Brainfreeze (VIP) [Unknown]

This is a serious tune. It don’t even need an MC; it does enough damage on its own! Big up Dubzta for the specials.

Sir Pixalot - Pulse Remix [Unknown]

Another new tune - a good refix of Pulse X and soon to be a banger.

Nij - Diamond Dog [Forthcoming Spindark Recordings]

I'm the only one in the scene with this dub! Big up all the Spindark Recordings family for letting me have this so early.

Slimzee plays Electrikal with Riko Dan and Kahn & Neek at The Bongo Club, Edinburgh on Friday 6th.
