Hot of the Comics Press: Picks of the week

With DC’s domination of the media coverage after their big announcement, and the fallout regarding its renumbering of 52 titles back to number #1s, Marvel (never wanting to be outshined) had their own announcement to make: their long running title Uncanny X-Men will end its run with issue #544. Due to the events in the upcoming X-Men mini-series Schism (the X Civil War) it will see their situation so drastically changed that the X-Men may go their separate ways leading to the main book being renumbered. With that in mind it may be time to pick up the historic final issues of the series with Uncanny X-Men #538 out this week.

So, right back at you DC? With their big continuity change ahead it leaves it hard to recommend any DC title as all storylines happening currently may, officially, not exist. Except one that is also incidentally the one responsible for it all: the Flashpoint mini-series. This weeks Flashpoint tie-in comes in the form of Flashpoint: Wonder Woman and the Furies #1 (of 3) written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Hey, if you want to know the monstrous beast of a story changing the entire DC Universe, Flashpoint is the only place to look!

But if you're sick and tired of all this numbers game then fear not, as the indie alternatives continue ever on with fixed story time frames and consistent continuity.

In fact this week sees a host of new titles hitting the shelves. A fan of 80s fantasy-action movies? Why not try Red Sonja: Blue #1 written by Peter Brett with art by Walter Geovani, or Conan: Island of No Return #1 by Ron Marz. This could be just the camp and, albeit disposable, entertainment needed for such changing times.
