In Rude Health by Robbie Guillory

Book title: In Rude Health
Author: Robbie Guillory

Humans are a kinky, sexually dysfunctional and - above all - stupid species; just ask any of our frontline healthcare professionals, especially after a drunken Friday night in A&E. Robbie Guillory did, and the result of his labours is this handy pocket-sized volume filled with snappy wee stories about bizarre accidents, strange events and weirder patients. This is an absolute delight to drop into - whether you feel the need for either a quick laugh or a none-too-subtle reminder that there’s always someone out there who’s worse off, and probably far more idiotic, than you (especially if there’s a 'trained first aider' in the vicinity).

Naturally, all names - whether they’re medical staff or patients - have been removed to protect both the innocent and guilty, but what makes this book a little bit more special is the underlying message lurking between the stories; the wonderful thing that the National Health Service really is, ready and able to treat you regardless of whatever you’ve stuck up your bottom. And it’s a reminder too of the perseverence and gallows good humour of our doctors, nurses, dentists and ambulance staff who have to endure more than most. [Paul F Cockburn]
