Hot Off The Comics Press: The DC Reboot

Is it really the end of summer? It may very well be, as the sunshine begins to dissipate and the big events come to an end. Of course for one particular publisher, their event finale ushers in a brand new era. DC Comics has two titles out this week, both linked to each other as they mark the end (and the beginning) of the DCUniverse as we know it.

Flashpoint #5 (of 5) by Geoff Johns is the closing chapter of the tale responsible for meddling with the timeline and resetting it all. This issue sees the war between Diana of Themyscira and Emperor Aquaman tearing the world apart - unless The Flash can fix it. And we know roughly how it turns out as the timeline is reset for Justice League (2011) #1, also by Johns, with art by the legendary Jim Lee. Superheroes are now strange and new, whilst familiar heroes are unfamiliar with each other. If you ever wanted to get into comics, this is the time for you.

If you are not particularly enamored with the whole wiping the slate clean shtick, then Marvel is still invested in ongoing character development. Though by no means alienating new readers, Incredible Hulks #635 by Greg Pak will close out the scribe extraordinaire’s run on his heralded Hulk series. A change is coming though, as this final climatic battle for the Green Goliath ushers in a new era in this must-buy comic.

Sticking with the week’s theme of all things new, we look to the indie alternative and away from superheroes. The Rinse #1 by Gary Phillips with art by Marc Laming is a new crime series from Boom Studios with a unique spin. Moving away from assassins and jewel thieves we are instead presented with the tale of laundryman, Jeff Sinclair. Nope, he doesn’t do your dry cleaning, but he can turn a dirty million into a clean set of bills. Find out how it plays out in this solid new title.
