Hot Off The Comics Press: Picks of the Week 20 July

So what do we have in the world of comic books this week? It seems that DC is having bouts of nostalgia with some tales of yesteryear. Focusing on unpublished stories from the 1970s, this week sees three titles by DC début in aptly named The 70s series. DC Retroactive: Batman - The 70s #1by Len Wein, DC Retroactive: Flash - The 70s #1by Cary Bates and DC Retroactive: Wonder Woman - The 70s #1 by Dennis O'Neil all get dusted down for shelf space this week.

If you're not a fan of retro-reading, pick up one of the (albeit surprisingly) best DC Flashpoint tie-ins with Flashpoint: Deadman and the Flying Graysons #2 (of 3). This re-envisioning of the DCU sees Deadman and Robin's former family the Graysons trapped behind enemy lines.

Over at Marvel, there may be an over familiarity developing for some readers with the host of X-titles on the shelf right now. If you want something fresh, check out Generation Hope #9 by Kieron Gillen. It may be a familiar premise (scouting the globe for new mutants), but this stripped-down storytelling focuses on new, young characters and proves a streamlined and enjoyable series.
If you want to keep it indie on the other hand, the new mini-series in the Locke and Key world, Locke and Key Clockworks #1 (of 6) by Joe Hill with art by Gabriel Rodriguez is out this week. This comic book meta-series by IDW Publishing is a story of dark fantasy and wonder telling tales of Keyhouse a New England mansion with doors with a mind of their own. This mini-series opens “not with a bang, but with the thunderous crash of English cannons”; this is the beginning of the end for the Locke and Key series, pick it up today. able on the door, it's not too late to get your comic book fix this weekend.
