Les Garcons de Glasgow

Posted by Emma Segal, Mon 01 Feb 2010

Looking at the front row of any fashion week show, the increasing power of the blog is plain to see. From 13 year old sensation Tavi being a guest of honour at Marc Jacobs, to Susie Bubble at Louise Goldin, or Scott ‘The Sartorialist’ Schuman a permanent fixture of New York Fashion Week, the democratisation of fashion through the internet has become undeniable. Hoping to harness some of this success for Scotland, photographers Daniel Stern and Jonathan Pryce have decided to set up ‘Les Garcons de Glasgow' to document Glasgow’s street style. The aim of the blog, according to its creators, is to showcase Scottish style at a time ‘when everyone is looking to London’; a noble cause indeed. A quick glance at the website highlights that this task is not as daunting as it first sounds; Glasgow’s streets are full of fashion forward and street fashion heroes, all expertly captured, with shots rivaling the more established blogs. This development also seems organic and current, with Scottish talent such as designers Christopher Kane, Louise Gray and Holly Fulton becoming hugely successful in London. In the context of street style, one could point to Aberdonian designer Dr. Noki’s export of Scottish Style to his cult-like following in East London. Admittedly it is early days yet for ‘Les Garcons’ but, provided it can continue to represent Glasgow style and develop a unique voice in the aesthetic of the blog, its influence will no doubt continue to grow.
