Noir! Chapter Three; Fashion

Feature by Gemma Lawrence | 11 Oct 2009

Noir! began as an Edinburgh collective, inviting like-minded artists and designers to work in a new environment free from the pressures of an external curator. The concept was first conceived at a Jonathan Freemantle exhibition and developed into the idea of throwing a party that the organisers themselves wanted to be at.

Chapter Three-Fashion took place on the 17th September, in Hawke and Hunter’s elaborate new venue ‘The Green Room’ where Edinburgh’s top designers released their latest creations. The half clothed busts and models in frozen poses placed around the room generated a feeling of live creative exploration, presenting blank canvases to be shaped and moulded in the course of the evening. On the catwalk trends of tartan and purple were highly favoured by the designers. While 21st Century Kilts experimented with scale and new variants on the traditional kilt, Godiva showed Scottish inspiration in an alternative approach to working with tweed. Traditional materials were punctuated by the bold primary colours seen in Kakoa by K’s designs and in the simplistic elegance of Totty Rocks. Viewers were then invited to enter a world of fantasy in the staging of Joyce Paton’s lingerie range. Modelled by a dancing trio of characters from Alice in Wonderland. This concluded the event fittingly by capturing its fresh and dynamic atmosphere and in doing so paving the way for Edinburgh’s future artists and designers.
