Limbo @ The Voodoo Rooms, 30 Oct

As they approach their first birthday, Limbo produce a couple of gems to ensure they should be a staple on any local gig-goer's calendar

Chronological order usually reflects the status or renown of a gig's performers, but it doesn't always necessarily mirror the quality. Tonight at Limbo, though, the correlation is completely accurate. Clint (**) are mildly entertaining, if wholly confusing and as such, bode well for what lies ahead. The frontman, dressed like he's auditioning for a Hovis advert, sings / shouts like he's shooting for De La Rocha's spot in Rage. Were it not for his incessant fidgeting at a Kaoss Pad, he'd have surely joined early revellers on the dancefloor. Alas, he is busy, but goes nowhere – a convenient analogy for the band on this particular night.

New Wave evangelists Babygod (****) are next, boasting the best gum chewing vocalist since Shane McGowan's infamous TOTP performance. They recall U2, back when they made exciting, melodic post-punk and Ian McCulloch, back when he said U2 were shite – a derivative cocktail, sure, but one that works to great effect. Current single Time, is definite airplay fodder but Babygod have more bows in their armoury, and are unlucky tonight to be eclipsed by the headliners.

Songs about working men's clubs in Kilmarnock may not be the most glamorous subject matter, but Cancel The Astronauts (****) pull them off with a kind of exuberance usually reserved for Mardi Gras. CTA's music is perfectly embodied in their lead singer: his upper body attire of waistcoat and tie reflect the smart, Strokes-esque basslines, whilst his red tracksuit bottoms are symbolic of the irreverent playfulness that sets them apart. For fans of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: this is how you wish they sounded live.
