Most guys would love to have a girlfriend who watches porn – it means she’s really in-tune with her sexuality and pretty much gasping for it 24/7, right? Not necessarily... Marianna Palka’s feature debut Good Dick explores the notion of a girl obsessed with erotica, and who inspires the die-hard affections of a sweet, young video-rental store clerk. Despite the girl’s continuous hostility towards him, he continues to be optimistic in his efforts to woo her, patiently waiting for reciprocation - which she insists will never come. A brilliant study of gender role-reversal, the film may baffle some who like their love stories a little more relate-able, especially since the main characters remain nameless and their pasts hidden. Small chunks of personal information are revealed, but these are no more than strategically-placed details which serve to keep the plot running and build towards an ending that can feel unfinished. Despite that, Good Dick is still a satisfying watch: optimistic and genuinely affecting in places, Palka’s modern fairytale of love, sex and faith is a must-see for hopeless romantics and hostile porn addicts alike. This looks brilliant! Is it foreign language?
