After midnight Krafty Kuts appears, with a set displaying both his talents and failings

Sugarbeat came out of the club and into the gardens, utilising the marquees set out for the annual sadomasochist's fun run, The Rat Race, rather than the (quite frankly, decrepit) Ross Bandstand like previous gigs. This turns out to be a masterstroke as it pisses down with rain all night, but inclement conditions aren't going to dampen the spirits, especially with the block party vibe A Skillz brings, mixing classic hip-hop and contemporary breaks. Over in the smaller tent Dan Greenpeace takes over from the DJ competition with a similarly crowd pleasing set. Soon after midnight Krafty Kuts appears, with a set displaying both his talents and failings. Large sections of good, tough underground breaks, like new Plump DJs' track Listen to the Baddest, were ruined by the kind of lazy formulaic tunes that are blighting the scene, like an unforgivable Calvin Harris bootleg. And don't get this reviewer started on the ego-boosting samples Kuts drops every half hour. In all fairness though, the DJs on show all know how to entertain, and at the end of the day, isn't that what clubbing's all about? [Peter Walker]
