Film title: Vulgaria

A gross-out comedy from Hong Kong, the well named Vulgaria pushes the boundaries of taste in its dialogue and storyline while coyly keeping what appears on screen comparatively chaste.

To Wai-Cheung is a hapless film producer who, desperate for money, travels from Hong Kong to the mainland to meet with Tyrannosaur, a blinged-out mob boss, who wants To to remake his favourite porn film. After offending the gangster and his crew by refusing to eat the unspeakable dishes they serve him at a banquet (genitals feature prominently on the menu), To must make amends by having initimate relations with a mule.

Made at breakneck speed in 12 days, Vulgaria zips along at a refreshing pace buoyed up by a number of nice performances from an enthusiastic cast led by the pitch-perfect Chapman To (Infernal Affairs). If some of the gags are too culturally specific to travel well and many others simply fall flat, there are enough that are extremely funny to make this a diverting watch. [Keir Roper-Caldbeck]
