Caesarean Section. Essays on Suicide @ Summerhall

Cheerful Stuff

Review by Steven Fraser | 15 Aug 2012

The start of the performance sets the tone of Caesarean Section. Essays on Suicide. The audience enters the performance space to the continuous sound of tapping. We take our seats; the lights darken and then the room enter complete darkness. Smashing glass suddenly echoes around the room and sends shivers throughout as the glass rains on the hard wood floor. The lights go up and the performance ensues.

What we are confronted with for the next hour is masterful physical theatre and an honest and through provoking interpretation of suicide, compulsion and despair. Teatr Zar have tackled a serious, relevant and vital subject matter with the grace, genuine honesty and poise that it requires.

What makes the performance so special is not only the physicality of the piece, but the music and soundtrack, which is beautifully performed. String section, piano and accordion intertwine with the actors on stage to heighten the tension and deliver the subject. This tension however reaches new heights with the vocal performance. The voices of the Teatr Zar players engulf the space, pushing and pulling the actors as they struggle with their own torments and the torments of others.

Caesarean Section. Essays on Suicide is a visual delight that blends skill, emotion and power, and bestows it in an unrestrained and intriguing manner. The performance never looses sights of its intentions or ability to convey an important and critical message.
