Profisee – From All Angles

Album Review by Bram E. Gieben | 03 Apr 2012
Album title: From All Angles
Artist: Profisee
Label: Cloak X Daggger
Release date: 9 April

Profisee has been incredibly prolific in the years since the Scotland Yard Emcees went their separate ways, working with a literal who's who of electronic and bass music producers. For his first full-length solo album, he's drafted in the best and brightest. This is a landmark album for the local scene, with the likes of Dems, Dam Mantle, S-Type, AK Kids, Nasty P and Neil Landstrumm. International contributions come from Planet Mu's electro-dubstep don Starkey and Ninja Tune's broken beat maestro Poirier, among others.

The album is incredibly coherent for such a collaborative effort, with a luxurious, slick sheen on every track, all united by Profisee's direct, crystal-clear lyrics. Standout tracks include the ever-fresh Movin' with Poirier on a linear, bass-heavy hip-hop groove; Nasty P's spaced-out digi-dub twinned with Profisee's mystical explorations on Golden Ratio; the loping, Carpenter-esque synths of Landstrumm-produced What Would You Do; and the anthemic, in-your-face, Prince-sampling grime of Take My Hand, produced Scharkz. Throughout, Profisee resists the excesses of over-produced bass music in favour of intelligent, complex beats and melodic arrangements, his always-impressive flow anchoring each track. Slick, stylish, and infectious – a triumph.
