Which One's Fergal?

On stage, there is a man wearing an ostentatious hoodie and a baseball cap with ‘Skillz’ sharpied on, talking in a Brummie accent and claiming to be a motivational rapper. Welcome to Garrett Millerick’s Which One’s Fergal?

There is something quite irritating about Skillz the Rapper; he is perhaps not the best choice for first on, last off, but there is no denying that Millerick has the accent and physicality down to a tee.

Each character he performs is distinctive, and never overdone or hammy. The characters embody public opinion of the institutions they represent; the fumbling, unsure Lib Dem MP, the posh Tory MP with a sense of entitlement, the over-zealous by-the-book policeman, and the arrogant, self-congratulatory advertising exec. Millerick appreciates the subtleties that make for a realistic performance and understands how to shade an accent so as to keep it believable, not stereotypical.

The show is not a side-splitter, but there is a lot of fun in the ribbing it gives to our society. It is gently satirical and quietly insightful, and though there’s no crying with laughter, there isn’t a dull moment and the hour passes quickly.

Well put-together character sketches and some excellent acting on show. Not a bad start to the day.
