Comedium @ Sweet

An afternoon of good-natured mind-trickery

Feature by Rebecca Paul | 22 Aug 2011

Peter Antoniou is warm and charming as he guides us through his curiosity with the workings of the mind in his show Comedium. A genuine interest in his audience is communicated nicely through his banter and relaxed performance; he bounces happily and confidently from person to person effortlessly engaging with each one of them.

Antoniou is inquisitive about the psychologies of everyday life, from the up-tempo music pounded out in fast food eateries encouraging us to munch quickly; to the marketing calls we get querying our choice of soap powder or preferred method of transport. He seeks to find the answers to what makes us tick through his playful mind-reading. This he does effectively.

The audience were bamboozled and although I’ve seen shows of this ilk, I still can’t tell you how he guessed the name of the first boy I ever kissed. Tall, dark and charming, his penetrating gaze was able to pull ideas out our heads, much like Dumbledore and his pensieve. The accompanying gasps from an intimate audience of seven, were well-earned.

If you’ve seen mind-reading before there’s nothing all that new about what he does but he does it well and with a modest charm that guarantees you leave satisfied and amused.
