Be still my beating heart

Feature by Daph Karoulla | 16 Aug 2011

Images by Backhand theatre is a close look at the effect of the city and technology on our humanity. As pointed out at the beginning of the piece, many people in the city probably haven't seen the green of the countryside, or felt the grass. Green spaces have become a rarity in our world, as has human contact.

In the city, we do not speak to strangers. We do not touch. We do not feel. A friend finds out about a friend's death through Facebook, even though they are only kilometres apart in the same city.

Alternating between the spoken word and dance, this pensive - yet not drastically overpowering - piece inspects the human condition in the modern age. Backhand theatre cry out for a generation that has forgotten how to be humane and is lost between urban noise and technology. Are we masters of innovation or have we been reduced to slaves of this technological age? Overall, it is a call to arms; we must do something to retrieve the humanity of our nature before it is too late!
