Naz Osmanoglu: 1000% Awesome

Article by Lewis Porteous | 18 Aug 2011

Naz Osmanoglu bounds onto the stage of the Udderbelly's already sweltering Wee Coo room, yelling and holding two functioning hair-dryers aloft. It's an introduction that registers as high energy in every possible sense. A member of the reliable sketch troupe WitTank, as a solo performer Osmanoglu seems to have struck upon the notion that weaker material can be salvaged by forceful, high-octane delivery. Thus in 1000% Awesome, moments of genuine inspiration sit alongside pedestrian ruminations, many of which tend to be focussed on the performer's background.

Indeed, it is Naz's Turkish father and, by extension, his claim to the country's throne that serve as the framework for the show. The irritating habits true to Turkish men of a certain age are explained and called back on to the point of tedium, while the evening ends with a ceremonial crowning.

An unpredictable performer, it is when he diverts his attention from his chosen theme that Osmanoglu shines. His riff on the origins of Bear Grylls is brought to life by expressive body language, while his take on Britain's Got Talent builds to a jaw dropping crescendo of manic energy. An interlude in which the many potential uses of a towel are revealed to us is fantastically inventive, though it is his final anecdote, told from within a cardboard box, that sticks in one's memory.

There are many reservations to be had about 1000% Awesome, among them the performer's callous dismissal of the poor, but there is no denying the abundance of potential displayed by the 25-year-old.
