Pick of the Fringe, 12th Aug

Review by Stephen Toman | 22 Aug 2011

Running three times a day throughout the festival, with a different line-up each time, Laughing Horse’s Pick of the Fringe is a great way to sample a variety of comedians, many of whom are also doing free shows of their own.

MC Mike Belgrave, looking like (in his own words) a ‘cartoon explorer’ did a good job of coaxing a laugh from the half-asleep early evening crowd and creating momentum between the evening’s three acts.

First up on today's bill was Talksport regular Sunna Jarman whose enthusiastic delivery and overall likability enlivened otherwise lacklustre material on celebrities and daytime TV.

Jem Brookes followed with a set heavy on audience interaction, introducing himself as a sharp and funny comedian with a keen eye that served as an advert to his own free show, Pintification.

Top of the bill was the gregarious and chuckleworthy Bruce Fummey – Scotland’s foremost afro-celtic, physics-teaching comic. Resembling an overweight Craig Charles, Fummey’s ten minutes of laugh-out-loud autobiographical served as an excellent advert to both of his solo shows at this years Fringe (‘My Afro Celtic Angst’ and ‘About Tam O Shanter’) but also proved that, put simply, he is a very, very funny man.
