Men show the lot

Feature by Clare Sinclair | 10 Aug 2011

The men in our lives: father, son, brother, husband. Defined by society as the hunter, the pillar of strength in the family environment, and the protector. Muscle by Shock N Awe company explores the many facets of man, and what characterises one.

More physical theatre than dance, Muscle combines monologue with movement, dramatics with dance as we hear tales of defining moments throughout very different sorts of male lives.

Greg Cullen’s writing and directing leads us on a poignant journey through the pitfalls of masculinity. Humorous moments of becoming a father for the first time, the difficulties of having the responsibilities of a family at a young age, and the liability of protecting your country.

All the stories are worlds apart, yet held together through common need to fulfil a role. This piece is quietly powerful, never needing to shout about its message instead allowing the words and actions to shine.

The text is taken from interviews from all array of males across Wales, and it is this earnest truth which shines through. Phil Williams’ choreography allows dance to segue seamlessly into words: a particularly strong section about a young boy with muscular dystrophy proves movement and theatre can come together, with neither form suffering. An excellent look into the lives of men.
