Gareth Morinan: The Truth (Explained in Doodles!)

Article by Jenni Brooks | 13 Aug 2011

Data analysis is the new frontier in comedy – honest. If you’re not convinced, Gareth Morinan’s innovative gem of a show may just change your mind. Mixing hard-hitting stats with quirky animations, it’s quite possibly the perfect balance of left and right brain stimulation. (In fact, he probably has a pretty pie chart for that.)

As he shambles around before the show setting up projector and cabling, Morinan’s warm chat puts the audience at ease from the outset. After a short guest slot, he proceeds to deliver a slideshow of simple cartoons – featuring charming animal and fruit characters – interspersed with charts and graphs and some nifty ‘real-time’ graphics. There are many surreal twists and turns which delight the audience and provoke squeals of joy from all corners. Morinan has an instinctive feel for mixing daft artiness with the ‘here comes the science’ bit, making the best of each to drive home both silly and thought-provoking points.

With a part in Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s upcoming BBC/HBO series Life’s Too Short, and appearing in the spin-off documentary, it’s likely we’ll be seeing a lot more of him to come.

Clever, funny and original, Gareth Morinan is going places – see him now.
