Winnebago Deal – Career Suicide

Album Review by Ali Ryland | 03 Nov 2010
Album title: Career Suicide
Artist: WInnebago Deal
Label: Cargo/ We Deliver The Guts
Release date: 15 Nov

To avoid confusion, I would like to point out that this third full length LP entitled Career Suicide is by punk rock 'n' roll duo Winnebago Deal; not the arguably better '07 Career Suicide, lovebaby of hardcore punk rockers A Wilhelm Scream and, strangely, their third album too. It's not a major blunder; I mean it's not like the two Career Suicides hail from the same aggro punk Kerrang! featuring roots.

Embarrassing lack of innovation aside, Winnebago Deal's fast-paced energy with a dash of retro has been sullied by the 'darker' side of their material; with songs like I Want Your Blood, they may be dangerously close to Wednesday 13 territory. Or worse when their lyrics seem to have spewed out of a lank haired fourteen year old boy (did someone say Black Tide? The two bands even have a similar rock 'n' flop style, before their lead singer hit puberty and went all 'scene').

In all honesty, they may have a few high voltage riffs, but the Deal's catchphrase should be 'when I get sad, I cut myself...another slice of cheesecake!' Their depressing themes just cannot be taken seriously; besides, only Belle and Sebastian get away with the done-to-death topic of workplace woe. [Ali Ryland]
