Johanna Basford @ DCA

Review by Katie Rice | 10 Jul 2013

The latest offering from Dundee Contemporary Arts showcases the work of one of the city's very own art graduates, artist and illustrator Johanna Basford. Graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone in 2005, this is Basford's first major exhibition and, in a nod to Lewis Carroll's Alice, she has transformed the gallery space into an enchanting, black and white wonderland.

The journey begins in an illustrated forest of trees which gradually increase in size as you advance into the gallery, thus providing the illusion of moving deeper into this richly detailed and enchanting place. In Gallery 2 Basford's signature use of black and white is palpable, with one whole side of the gallery wall transformed by a vast wallpaper which took Basford and a team of assistants dozens of hours to complete. A corridor of hand-drawn cuckoo clocks adorns the opposite wall and a sailing boat covered in patterned illustrations sits serenely in the middle of the floor.

As an added bonus, Basford has recreated her studio in one of the small rooms off the main gallery - the walls and floor are strewn with drawings and a set of shelves contains nature and wildlife books. There is even a set of skis resting against the wall covered in Basford's unique stylings. Wonderlands is a truly appealing exhibition: Basford’s designs are intricate and mesmerising and will appeal to the imaginations of adults and children alike.
