NIRVANA: RARE LIVE FOOTAGE UNEARTHED
New live footage of legendary grunge rockers Nirvana has been released this week. Recorded at MTV's Live & Loud in the band's home town of Seattle in 1993, as the band were preparing to release their third album In Utero, the recording features a live version of their track Scentless Apprentice, and features the band's final touring lineup of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear. The track will be included in the forthcoming 20th Anniversary Boxset of In Utero, alongside some of producer Steve Albini's original mixes of the album tracks, and a wealth of live and unheard material, due to be released on 24 September. More details of the package can be found here.

NEW MUSIC: MAZZY STAR, BECK, HONEYBLOOD, GRIZZLY BEAR, DELTRON 3030 & ZACK DE LA ROCHA
The undisputed kings and queens of the 1990s 'dream pop' movement, Mazzy Star return this month with their first studio album since 1996. The first track to surface online was the lush, textured ballad In The Kingdom, which shows the band on fine form, augmenting their distinctive guitar sound and the irresistable vocals of Hope Sandoval with subtle organ accompaniment. You can now stream the entirety of the new album, Seasons Of Your Day, over at The Guardian.

Beck's new track Gimme is the third in a series of stand-alone singles released by the veteran US indie maverick, following on from Defriended and I Won't Be Long. You can now buy the track direct from Beck's website. Beck has two forthcoming albums slated for release – an acoustic album and a full studio album, neither of which will feature these three exclusive tracks, so grab 'em while they're hot.

Honeyblood, the all-female Glasgow two-piece comprised of Shona McVicar and Stina Tweeddale, follow up a series of festival triumphs with their first 7" single on limited edition vinyl, leading off with the bittersweet indie-pop of Bud (below). The band are set to wow Edinburgh crowds once more with an appearance at The Skinny's showcase at The Pleasance Sessions on 12 October, alongside Rick Redbeard, LAW and Siobhan Wilson. Details here.

Warp-signed experimental indie rockers Grizzly Bear return this month with an expanded and reimagined version of their critically-acclaimed album Shields Up. The album – titled Shields Expanded, and released alongside a smaller, more modest collection, Shields B-Sides – will be released on 12 November, with a host of remixes from the likes of Nicolas Jaar, early sessions for the album, and rare tracks. Stream one of the early sessions, Will Calls (Marfa Demo) below.

In hip-hop circles, Deltron 3030, a hip-hop supergroup spearheaded by Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, and comprising Kid Koala and Dan The Automator, are genuine legends – and on their new track, they have teamed up with another giant of the US alternative rap scene – Rage Against The Machine and One Day As A Lion vocalist Zack De La Rocha. The result, Melding Of The Minds, is explosive. The new Deltron 3030 record, Event 2, is out on 1 October, and is their first album since their 2000 debut.

UPCOMING GIGS: HADDOWFEST, THE OUTER CHURCH, EASTERN PROMISE
Two very special gigs coming your way this October – first, Edinburgh indie-lovers will welcome the return of HaddowFest, which takes place across various venues in the capital on 11 and 12 October. The lineup for this year's shindig is pretty unbeatable, with headline sets from The Rifles, The Holy Ghosts, We Were Promised Jetpacks and Dry The River. Also featuring on the bill are OK Social Club, Hector Bizerk, and The Merryless, among others. Details and tickets here.

Over in Glasgow on 26 October, respected experimental electronic pioneers, Brighton's The Outer Church, bring their critically-lauded touring show to Scotland, with performances from Black Mountain Transmitter, Embla Quickbeam and Broken3. There will also be a film screening – Graham Reznick's "psychedelic campfire tale" I Can See You will be shown on the night. The Outer Church also play Edinburgh's Wee Red Bar on 25 October. Expect haunting, spectral electronica and rich, complex music from these much-admired Brighton wunderkinds. We spoke to Joseph Stannard of TOC last month - read our interview here.

Eastern Promise makes its return to Easterhouse’s Platform venue with another carefully curated bill of contemporary folk on 4-5 October. Fence Collective original James Yorkston joins Alasdair Roberts on Friday night, alongside Michael Gira protégé James Blackshaw, Glasgow’s own Trembling Bells (with The Incredible String Band’s Mike Heron) and this year’s Cannes soundtrack award winner Jozef Van Wissem. Saturday, meanwhile, sees the live return of the ever dependable Vaselines, our january cover star Rick Redbeard, Adam Stafford, multi-instrumentalist chanteuse Ela Orleans, and from the south, Alexander Tucker and Daniel O’Sullivan resurrect their transcendental psych pop project, Grumbling Fur. WHEN A$AP ROCKY MET AESOP ROCK
Their names sound a little similar, but their music couldn't be more different – while New York's A$AP Rocky trades in thugged-out, drugged-up tales of street life, Def Jux veteran Aesop Rock is a past master of the surreal couplet and the rambling, psychedelic verse. Here, they meet for the first time in a "nerdy hip-hop moment." It's a bit of a pointless clip, but we enjoyed watching their first meeting... perhaps the beginning of an enduring bromance, or even a future collaboration?
