Queen's Park film project: Phil Collins calls out for local contributions

Article by News Team | 12 Feb 2014

Phil Collins is a Berlin-based visual artist and Turner Prize nominee who lived in Glasgow during the 90s and 00s. Now, he is returning to the city to embark upon an ambitious new project, which will see him engaged in creating a new vision of the city, blending fact and fiction as he draws on photographs, stories and visual mementos. If you want to take part in the project, and perhaps see some of your own photographs or stories included in the project when it premieres in Queen's Park this July, scan your photos and email them to info@thecommonguild.org.uk, care of the project's backers, The Common Guild.

Collins says he is looking for a diverse range of material from contributors. "Photographs of relationships, such as weddings, commitment ceremonies or secret love affairs, are full of happy memories, surprises, accidents and, not rarely, serious fashion disasters," he observes.

Collins is also looking for stories and personal recollections about the city. "Glaswegians are known the world over for being born storytellers and comedians. The city’s literary influence outranks most others by a country mile but an original and forceful facility with language is equally heard from every street corner, bus stop and taxi rank."

Collins hopes to meet with "ordinary Glaswegians who have stories to tell, some private and as yet unheard, some everyday, some extraordinary, some painful, some comic, but all of which reflect the character and breadth of Glasgow." Those who wish to share their stories should also email The Common Guild, advising of their contact details.

Phil Collins was awarded the Paul Hamlyn Award for visual arts in 2001, and was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2006. His work has been seen around Glasgow in recent months, with screenings of his films about former teachers of Marxism-Leninism in East Germany, a family of Kosovan Albanian refugees and a group of Malaysian skinheads. His new project is part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme. The screening of the finished project will take place on 19 July in Queen's Park.
