somewhereto_: Call for young artists and curators

Feature | 14 Jun 2012

somewhereto_, in association with The Skinny, is looking for a new generation of artists and curators aged between 16 and 25 to take part in a touring art showcase exhibition later this year. The exhibition will hit Edinburgh, as well as Manchester and Liverpool, where it will show alongside The Skinny’s own art showcase exhibition. Both the artists and the curators will also be promoted on the somewhereto_ website.

This is a great opportunity for new artists to gain exhibition credits, or experience as a curator, as part of a project supported by Legacy Trust UK, The Skinny and Channel 4.

Curators

Fancy trying your hand at curating an exhibition? somewhereto_ are looking for fresh new curators with their own vision and the passion to help shape the somewhereto_ art showcase as part of a curatorial team.

You’ll work with a panel of other young curators to select artworks, construct a cohesive collection, and decide on display and arrangement of the works. Curators will be featured on the somewhereto_ website, and will benefit from the unique opportunity to build connections and friendships with other artists across the UK, as well as gain experience in a very cool role. The curator team will be expected to meet in Glasgow, Manchester or Liverpool twice before the exhibitions take place, and to attend at least one exhibition. Travel expenses for these meetings and events will be provided.

Interested but wouldn’t know where to start? Don’t worry – curators will benefit from mentors, who will guide you through the process of creating an exhibition from scratch.

To apply to become a somewhereto_ curator, please submit a letter of interest, no more than 500 words long, to rebecca.thompson@somewhereto.com  before 24 June.

Consider the following when composing your letter:

  • Why do you want to be a part of this curatorial team?
  •  Do you have any relevant experience, including exhibitions you may have curated or coordinated, other projects you have coordinated, clubs?
  • A short biography of your artistic practice.
  • A short artist’s statement: tell us what your art practice is all about, what are your goals in making artworks? Where do you want to be as an artist in the future?
  • How do you feel your personal artistic goals will influence or drive your curatorial decisions?
