The Black Keys - Oceans and Streams

The Black Keys
Single title: Oceans and Streams
Artist: The Black Keys
Label: V2/Co-Op
Release date: 15 Sep

In 2007, The Black Keys announced they would collaborate with Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, Demon Days by Gorillaz) for a forthcoming LP. Given that the blues two-piece had always self-produced, this sounded interesting. The end result, Attack and Release, didn’t disappoint, and neither does its second single, Oceans and Streams. While the sound has been cleaned up, Mouse finds a funk-groove in the Keys formula and pushes it to the max, employing organs and handclaps, whilst still allowing Dan Auerbach’s gritty blues licks to cut through. Overall, the track shows two forces from divergent musical genres coming together to create a stunning and soulful single. [Jason Morton]

The Black Keys play The Queen's Hall, Edinburgh on 16 Nov.
