Following on from their debut EP, No Need For a Curtain, released via Scottish indie label PUBLIC back in March, Glasgow’s Walt Disco are gearing up for a string of single releases ahead of a new EP penned for early 2019. On their latest single Danube – which you can have an exclusive first listen to in the SoundCloud player below (or click here if it’s not displaying properly) – the art-pop four-piece have been working with Glasgow super producer, and Catholic Action frontman, Chris McCrory.

“When we headed into the studio with Chris McCrory we wanted to take everything we love about 12” dance tracks and distil it into a three-and-a-half minute pop song,” guitarist and synth player Dave Morgan tells us. “From the outset, we wanted to make a track that would sound as good blasting out of a club sound system as it would being streamed on Spotify.

“Chris’ enthusiasm for the recording process and his genuine interest in our band made the whole experience so enjoyable – the fun and freedom we had in the studio can really be heard in the final mix, with McCrory himself even playing xylophone and chimes on the latter [half] of the track.

“The track definitely draws influences from some of our favourite artists, with hints of ESG, Orange Juice and Talking Heads sprinkled throughout whilst still keeping a modern feel.”

The opening moments of Danube trick you into a false sense of disco before a deep groove takes over the track and James Potter’s silky smooth Davie Bowie via Edwyn Collins’ vocals kick in. Aided by the song’s playfully percussive mid-point and futuristic synths, Danube sounds fresh but familiar in equal measure.

“When you’re in love, you tend to daydream,” Potter tells us of the single. “Your mind wanders and this state of infatuation with someone is an escape from real life. The track to me sounds like a playful romance.”
