Magpie Blue, the moniker of 19-year-old singer-songwriter Millie Hanlon Cole, released her debut single Just In Time on 14 June via Seahorse Music and on first listen you can tell there’s something special about this young artist. Much like Lucy Dacus’ Night Shift, Just In Time is a song which misleads you with its gentle first half, before the pace shifts and you’re thrust into a world of swirling guitars, keys and driving drums, Hanlon Cole's rich vocal holding it all together.

Produced by Idlewild’s Rod Jones, Just In Time features the talents of Goodnight Louisa's Louise McCraw on guitar and Man of Moon’s Michael Reid on drums. The Skinny are delighted to be premiering its accompanying music video, shot on Edinburgh’s Portobello Beach by director Jude Thomas with assistance from Anthony Marshall and cinematographers Amy Urquhart and Andrew Harman.

"My Nana has lived in Portobello since I was little," Hanlon Cole tells us, "so I visited there throughout my childhood – the beach is very familiar to me and holds a lot of happy memories. It felt apt that a song that means so much to me should be paired with a location that emulates the same feeling. The track has quite a lot of different sounds and ideas, it’s quite busy in that sense, so a simple minimal visual felt like the perfect fit."

When we ask what the song is about, she tells us: "The melody holds quite a nostalgic melancholy, which inspired me to sing about escaping the grip of the emotional crutch of a past relationship. Getting over someone who’s had a massive emotional hold of you, held all of the cards so to speak, and left you feeling powerless. Then, there is that moment when you finally do get over it, force the other person to face up to the way they’ve treated you and you regain your power."
