Top Ten Events 1-8 Mar: Withered Hand, Lambchop + Geek Film Night!

Twisted folk fairytales are the order of the day as Withered Hand welcomes his new EP into the world, playing his first full band show of 2012 to mark the occasion. The night will also act as a double-headliner set with fellow Fencer The Pictish Trail, with able support coming from the alternative folk ruckus that is The Second Hand Marching Band. We also have it on good authority that head honcho King Creosote will be in tow with his kit-bag full of 80s vinyl, ready to play y'all into 1am drunkenness. We'd suggest getting down mighty early to grab the last few remaining tickets that will be allocated on a first come, first served basis on the door. For this month's Geek Film Night – where well-kent faces screen their favourite geeky film pleasure – Scottish comic Frankie Boyle chooses satirical sci-fi delight Starship Troopers, where a plucky young fascist military operation do battle with giant alien bugs. It's film gold, obviously. The screening will be preceded by Boyle chatting with host Mark Miller about just why he thinks it's such a winner. We're pretty sure that'll have a lot to do with the giant alien bugs. Watch the trailer: here.

The 28 Drawings Later public participation drawing project makes the move from its online home (where it's been growing as a submit-a-picture-a-day exhibition for the whole month of February) to the offline, physical space of The Old Hairdressers. Everyone who's taken part in the online challenge will be invited to show their work, where it'll take over the bar and mezzanine area. We suggest getting yourself along to the opening night, where there'll be prize-givings and beer and everything.

Sierra Metro return with the third installment in their experimental film programme, SMF (which will continue to unfold over the coming months), this time showcasing Aileen M. Stackhouse's new film, that was then and this is now... a time collage for five minutes only – a looped five-minute piece presenting a collage of moments of time between August 2009 and February 2012. Stackhouse will also perform a simultaneous live drawing action alongside the film, upping the magic levels yet more-so.

We end with a bit of a call to arms, as the national campaign to scrap new legislation for Public Entertainment Licenses continues. Tonight sees a number of Edinburgh figures join forces to condemn the new legislation, with a live panel including LeithLate's Morvern Cunningham, MSP Malcolm Chisholm, and independent producer Chloe Dear. Since these proposed changes would place unrealistic fees and administrative burdens on free admission arts centres and grassroots/DIY events, anyone with a love of their local, independent arts scene will likely want to express their distaste.
