Top Ten Events 1-8 Mar: Withered Hand, Lambchop + Geek Film Night! |
|
THE WEEK AHEAD...We kick off the week with Withered Hand, who'll be launching his new EP down in the dank depths of The Caves, with a gaggle of Fencers in tow (including The Pictish Trail, and a certain Mr Creosote). Things then get proper geeky with a screening of Starship Troopers (yes, giant alien bugs!), before we enjoy drawings of every shape, size, and hue as the 28 Drawings Later online drawing project takes up a physical form at The Old Hairdressers for a limited period. Synchronised cycling even makes its way into our week. We're not entirely sure how that happened... PICKS O' THE WEEKThe Caves, Edinburgh
Thu 1 Mar, 8pm, £12 (on the door)
Twisted folk fairytales are the order of the day as Withered Hand welcomes his new EP into the world, playing his first full band show of 2012 to mark the occasion. The night will also act as a double-headliner set with fellow Fencer The Pictish Trail, with able support coming from the alternative folk ruckus that is The Second Hand Marching Band. We also have it on good authority that head honcho King Creosote will be in tow with his kit-bag full of 80s vinyl, ready to play y'all into 1am drunkenness. We'd suggest getting down mighty early to grab the last few remaining tickets that will be allocated on a first come, first served basis on the door. Sun 4 Mar, 7pm, £5 (on the door)
Adam Stafford (pictured) and Radio Trees (aka Zoey Van Goey's Michael-John McCarthy) end their short northernly tour with a set down't Edinburgh's Third Door, with Stafford doing his ever-inventive solo thing – utilising only his voice, minimal guitar, and a loop-station – also lending a hand to Radio Trees, providing the vocals beats and guitar to McCarthy's gentle folk sounds. Support comes from cockle-warming Edinburgh folk quintet Loch Awe. You can download Radio Trees' EP for free here. Third track, The Day After It's Gone, is a particular gem. GFT, Glasgow

For this month's Geek Film Night – where well-kent faces screen their favourite geeky film pleasure – Scottish comic Frankie Boyle chooses satirical sci-fi delight Starship Troopers, where a plucky young fascist military operation do battle with giant alien bugs. It's film gold, obviously. The screening will be preceded by Boyle chatting with host Mark Miller about just why he thinks it's such a winner. We're pretty sure that'll have a lot to do with the giant alien bugs. Watch the trailer: here. 4. Lambchop
Oran Mor, Glasgow
Mon 5 Mar, 7pm, £20 here
Alternative country types par excellence, Nashville's Lambchop take to the road armed with their new album, Mr. M (reviewed here), another collection of pleasingly peculiar and poetic songwriting, with the new album also featuring liner notes illustrated with head honcho Kurt Wagner's original paintings. You can read our chat with the man himself here. And you can also watch him in the official tour trailer; smoking never looked so damn atmospheric. Watch it: here. The Old Hairdressers, Glasgow
Mon 5-Wed 7 Mar, 6pm-11.30pm (daily), Free
The 28 Drawings Later public participation drawing project makes the move from its online home (where it's been growing as a submit-a-picture-a-day exhibition for the whole month of February) to the offline, physical space of The Old Hairdressers. Everyone who's taken part in the online challenge will be invited to show their work, where it'll take over the bar and mezzanine area. You can view the full batch of drawings here (Kate MacKay's leaf drawing, pictured work). We suggest getting yourself along to the opening night, where there'll be prize-givings and beer and everything. THE SKINNY SHOWCASE SHOP IS OPEN

DJ, producer and remixer extraordinaire Andrew Weatherall (pictured; fresh from overseeing The Twilight Sad's new album at the tail-end of last year) and collaborative DJ partner Sean Johnston bring the sounds of their sub-120bpm London club night Glasgow-way for a new bi-monthly residency in the intimate surrounds of The Berkeley Suite. All about the slow grooves – taking in genres of disco, funk, soul, house, and beyond – it'll likely be a blissed-out gem of a thing. Listen to one of their live club mixes: here. Glasgow comes to life for Behaviour 2012 (3 Mar-29 Apr), with the festival returning from its brief sabbatical for a schedule of experimental live performance that sprawls over an eight week run. It'll take place both indoors, and outside – taking to streets, parks, shops... you name it. One of our highlights is already set to be Eilidh MacAskill's April event, Cycling Gymkhana, a reimagining of the 1901 event, complete with a historical cyclist parade, synchronised cycling, bizarre races, live music from Zoey Van Goey's Kim Moore, and a competition for best-decorated wheels. Sierra Metro, Edinburgh
Sat 3 Mar, 4pm, Free
Sierra Metro return with the third installment in their experimental film programme, SMF (which will continue to unfold over the coming months), this time showcasing Aileen M. Stackhouse's new film, that was then and this is now... a time collage for five minutes only – a looped five-minute piece presenting a collage of moments of time between August 2009 and February 2012. Stackhouse will also perform a simultaneous live drawing action alongside the film, upping the magic levels yet more-so. Sofi's Bar, Edinburgh
Fri 2 Mar-Tue 1 May, Daily, Free
Expressing her love for Bill Murray loud and clear, local artist Megan Lindsay takes over the wall space of Sofi's Bar for the next few months, where she'll be hanging a selection of her coloured pencil drawings of the man himself. For the opening night the exhibition will also be taking over Sofi's projection room, screening some Bill Murray gems, taking in the likes of Wes Anderson's Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic, plus some obligatory Ghostbusters 2 action. Oh, and shots of Campari. We're sold. MEETING
Out of the Blue Drill Hall, Edinburgh
Thu 1 Mar, 7pm, Free
We end with a bit of a call to arms, as the national campaign to scrap new legislation for Public Entertainment Licenses continues. Tonight sees a number of Edinburgh figures join forces to condemn the new legislation, with a live panel including LeithLate's Morvern Cunningham, MSP Malcolm Chisholm, and independent producer Chloe Dear. Since these proposed changes would place unrealistic fees and administrative burdens on free admission arts centres and grassroots/DIY events, anyone with a love of their local, independent arts scene will likely want to express their distaste.
