Big Hands is a bar that sits in prime position on Oxford Road in Manchester: close enough to the university to drown one's sorrows after submitting your final essay a day late; close enough to any of the Academies to continue the party once the music's over, and close enough to woo your date prior to your cultural dalliance at the Contact.
It's a little pricey for students (i.e. you won't find a three for a fiver deal on Jägerbombs), but prices are in line with the rest of the city – and almost certainly cheaper than any of the nearby gig venues.
You're sure to spot some musical types in here, either hiding in the back where it's dark and sticky, or lounging on a 70s style living room sofa – it all depends on the ego, of course. Skip the support act and get yourselves in the mood here. Best bring your own bog roll: the loos ain't pretty. [Anna Tully]
