Somewhere between mini-golf and the full-blown caddies 'n carts experience lies pitch and putt. For the unenlightened, it's similar to golf, but with much smaller courses. It's more for those who just want to hit a few balls, and less for anyone looking to work on their handicap, or hoping to close any dubious, multi-million pound deals.

Queen's Park Pitch and Putt is located on the park's south hill, facing the infirmary. Open from May-September every year, the course has 12 holes, and is free to use, with a deposit required for balls and clubs. As mentioned, the course is built on a hill – so, despite most of the greens being levelled out, the majority of your shots are going to yield interesting results. The tee-offs are not marked out particularly clearly, and their intended targets can be an even bigger mystery. Additionally, stealing every one of the 18 flags appears to be a rite of passage for anyone growing up within half a mile of the park, and the course itself is in need of some love – with some of the greens particularly overgrown, while one appears to be turning into a sort of domestic swampland. But, despite all this, Queen's Park Pitch and Putt is thoroughly recommended. It's great outdoors-y fun that’ll cost you nothing, is rarely busy, and has a general, old-school charm about it. Plus, if you get bored, you can get a game of lawnbowls or tennis instead. Everyone's a winner!
