I J Mellis sell proper farmhouse cheeses, from all over Europe, although it is very UK-heavy. Handily, each wheel of cheese has a mini blackboard describing its origin and taste, but if you’re not a cheese connoisseur – don’t be afraid to ask! The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and armed with a little knife for slicing off samples of whatever you fancy.

The walls are clean and bare, for it really is all about the cheese. Saying that, they also stock a fine selection of meats, which are freshly sliced to order, as well as a range of chutneys, oatcakes and breads: a one-stop shop for all your cheesy needs.
