Meltmongers

It's true what they say, sometimes simplicity is key. Take Meltmongers, for example; sure, when the idea of introducing a toastie shop to Edinburgh's cafe scene came about there were probably more than one or two raised eyebrows. Could a simple sandwich shop stand out amidst the plethora of dainty independent cafes on Bruntsfield Place? The answer, it seems, is yes. Why? Because bread and cheese is a winning combination.

Meltmongers is a cheese lover's utopia, and the menu positively oozes with dreamy creations. Of course, there's the signature grilled cheese sandwiches – 'the melts' – which are made with chunky, homemade sourdough bread. You can play it safe with a classic cheddar, crank up the heat with an Applewood smoked cheddar jalapeño number, or have a daliance with Le Fondre, the French-inspired brie and caramelised onion favourite.

There are also some tempting breakfast options, including a burrito which has to be seen to be believed, and some loaded taters, which come smothered in a cheese dipping sauce and maple smoked bacon. If that isn't enough to tempt you out of bed, fear not, the breakfast options are served all day.

Round things off with a Meltmallow (that's a nutella, banana and marshmallow melt to you and I), and you can officially hedge your bets that hangovers and hunger pangs alike dinnae stand a chance.
