A self-professed ‘dive bar’, The Mousetrap, yet another step in Leith’s gastronomic and cultural resurgence of late, can be a lot to take in on first glance.
Upon entering you will be greeted with the bar’s uniquely off-the-wall interior: bedecked in a litany of curious wall-hangings and furnishings which will reproduce that sense of overwhelmed excitement of anyone who once played the 90s board game.
It may sound like a thoroughly uncomfortable experience from what has been described thus far but not so. Again, much like that familiar board game, a lot though it may be to take in, it is also a bag of fun once you’re there. The bar offers plenty to keep punters entertained, with a gloriously retro arcade gaming area; board games littered around the bar and live music and DJs in regular attendance.
It must be stated that these various distractions are by no means to cover-up for any sort of failing in the drinks department. There is a wide variety of beers and spirits on sale as well as a decent smattering of quirky cocktails, all at very reasonable prices. It’s a hard aesthetic to pull off and it’s even harder to describe how The Mousetrap manages it but needless to say, it is well worth finding out for yourself.
