Located in the heart of Edinburgh by Waverley Station, with six exhibition galleries within the space, the City Art Centre is both home to the City of Edinburgh's outstanding collection of Scottish art and one of the United Kingdom's top temporary exhibition spaces.

Originally constructed as part of The Scotsman newspaper buildings between 1899 and 1902, it later played home to the city's wholesale fruit and vegetable market before being converted for gallery use in 1980. The gallery itself holds over 4500 works of Scottish art – including paintings, watercolours, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture and installation art dating from the 17th century to present day. It puts on regularly changing exhibitions featuring the work of both local and international artists ranging from photography to science fiction (art work and costumes from the Star Wars' films being one) and rare antiquities from ancient civilizations.

There's also a shop and a cafe in which you can rest those tired wee legs of yours after a morning of cultural immersion and whatnot.
