SxSW 2015: Obey City on Merlot Sounds and working with Kelela

Video | 28 Apr 2015

We catch up with Obey City in Austin between his shows at South by Southwest 2015.

Brooklyn based Obey City, also known as Sam Obey, is a co-founder of Astro Nautico and released two records on the Scottish-born label LuckyMe Records. The first release was 'Champagne Sounds' followed by 'Merlot Sounds', which was released earlier this year. Sam talks to us about the production of Merlot Sounds, how the record was intended to relate to the previous release and his experience while making it.

He discusses what it was like working with various vocalists such as Kelela on the track 'Airy'. "That track was probably about a year in the making," he says, "[Kelela]'s very meticulous, and a bit of a perfectionist with her writing... my contribution is really to just make a comfortable backdrop for her vocals".

Catch up on our coverage from this year’s festival – including diaries from the festival, session tracks from Hector Bizerk and The Twilight Sad, and a behind-the-scenes look at LuckyMe Record's festival experience – at our SxSW hub.
