Originally opened in 1912, the Opera House in Manchester has changed hands, names and functions over the years — even serving as a bingo hall after surviving the Manchester WWII bombings unscathed. Nowadays the venue hosts a variety of performances including opera, drama, comedy and touring music, as well as yearly pantomimes. The Grade II listed building still has most of its classic interior — it holds three tiers of seating and a huge stage complete with an orchestra pit for musical events, and the room is still adorned in rather grand looking decor. It certainly hasn't modernised much over the years. The Opera House has held many well known names in stand up comedy, including Eddie Izzard, Michael Palin and Dylan Moran, and has seen productions of some of the world's best loved musicals and plays. Opening times vary depending on the event so check our listings for more details. [Charlotte Davies]
