The on-site theatre for drama and arts students at Manchester Metropolitan University, Capitol is renowned for the high calibre of its home-grown actors. The likes of Steve Coogan, Richard Griffiths and David Threlfall have previously trained here and even Julie Walters performed here in the early days of her career. It frequently stages reimagined versions of classic dramatic works, but has also featured much lesser-known plays as well as musical productions and famous novels adapted for the stage. The historic building opened as a cinema in 1931, but became the university's theatre in 1971, and since relocating in 1997 the 140 seat theatre space has held three different productions per term, all adapted, directed and acted by drama students. The Capitol is a great place to see some of the best budding actors having their moment in the spotlight, and there's every chance you'll see the next big star of the acting world. Opening times vary depending on performances so check out our listings for more details. [Charlotte Davies]
