As city-centre venues go, it's difficult to get nearer to the hub of the action than The Ark. So close to the bustle of Princes Street that a vigorous dose of Shoppers'-Elbow could propel you right on inside, its split-level layout of downstairs bar and upper gig/club area allows punters to enjoy a civilised drink in front of the gigantic Castle-facing arch windows before bouncing upwards to bop the night away to the pick of local bands and guest DJs.
