Spoon Café-Bistro

Gorgeously eclectic upper-level café and bistro, "Spoon", recently relocated from its popular location on Blackfriars Street to these larger premises across from the Festival Theatre. While presentation is most definitely a strong-point, with print-customised tables and chairs, pop-art cushions and painstakingly selected knick-knicks, it's definitely not a case of style over substance. Spoon offers breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, all reasonably priced and delicious sounding (the organic wild boar sausages with puy lentils & dijon mustard are a case in point) and, if word of mouth is to be believed, are the proud creators of Edinburgh's most delectable carrot cake.  Quirky comfort personified.

  • It's great for a drink or a coffee. Personally I'd advise against the food. On my last visit I had a Ploughman's Lunch which you'd think most chefs would find tricky to get wrong. The ham had a green/grey tinge to it which rendered it inedible. For £9.00 I would have hoped for far better. There's many great restaurants in town that serve lunch for the same price and you'd get (and expect) a much higher standard.
On the occasions I've been there the skill of the chef did not reflect the prices charged.
However, the atmosphere is great and so is the service.
