Mono, Glasgow

Mono is a welcome break from the chain bars and pretentiously 'cool' venues in Glasgow's Merchant City. It's slightly rough and the staff always seem confused, but it has a contagious nonchalance which makes it an easy place to chill out. The in-house record shop (Monorail, www.monorailmusic.com) ensures there's lots of cool types hanging about and the live music is consistently good. It serves a vegan menu; reasonably priced hearty meals with a remarkable variety, considering it's all animal-free. Adored by its regulars, Mono has a heart and soul and a good ear to boot.
