Maxie's Bistro

On each of the four occasions that The Skinny has had the pleasure to dine at Maxies, not once has it been anything less than delightful. Unevenly flagged walls and cavernous ceilings gives it the potential to be a little intimidating, but an open plan, split-level dining layout, along with lashings of mismatched cushions and cosy lighting, gives it a far more bohemian feel. The á la carte menu, while never disappointing, often offers less of an explosion for the tastebuds than the specials blackboard, which has been known to boast such jaw-droppers as a secret recipe death-by-sticky-toffee extravaganza and pheasant stuffed with black pudding smothered in a port sauce. And while we're talking of alcohol, Maxies's is something of a connoisseur, with wine and whisky choices occupying more than twice the number of pages as all the meal options combined.
Gorgeous little bistro that doesn't blow its own trumpet nearly loudly enough. Go eat.

  • I didn't understand what all the hype was about so I did visit when I made it there. What a dissapointment. The food was so over rated that I went out to read the sign thinking I am at the wrong address. The food, or lack of it was over priced for what you get. Every plate that I saw come out was the same but only the meat was changed. I was very excited when I followed a link during my search for a good night out. There is no bar like the sign said outside but rather a counter where you pay your bill. They just happen to keep the liquor behind it with no chairs or stools.
The excitement to add this stop onto my agenda was their website. It looks like a beautiful outdoor setting but those tables were not there. There was a really nice place next door that was serving up some cool dishes on the deck. I think I learned my lesson. Next time in Scotland I shall visit the spicy, friendly, original place next door. Plus the sitting on the outdoor deck or balcony were tables for them, not Maxies which made sitting so limited at maxie.
I do hope this helpd anyone wondering about the outdoor eatery.
