Double Dutch

Directly opposite Edinburgh University's George Square campus, Double Dutch is nevertheless home to a pleasingly varied clientele of students, professionals, and tourist-types. With a menu offering a flurry of scrupulously-prepared, Med-inspired dishes, from bruschettas to moussakas to gratin, this glass-fronted bistro's appeal isn't even slightly lost in translation.

  • I went to Double Dutch to meet up with friends last year and had some food there. I spent the next 24 hours with food poisoning (norovirus). One of my friends said that when she'd been there in the past, she'd been handed a slice of mouldy cake. I've met two people who used to work in the kitchens and both said that the food hygiene there is appalling, with filthy kitchen surfaces and basic hand-washing rules ignored. I rang Double Dutch and told them what had happened, and all they could offer me was a free meal, which isn't much use since I'm obviously never eating there again. They certainly didn't seem interested in taking responsibility for the affair and checking out what was going on.

I reported the incident to Environmental Health, who took it very seriously since there were several other incidents known of. When I rang them to ask their findings, they said that they're not allowed to tell members of the public what has happened. However, they did tell me that the most that can happen in cases such as this is a fine, so there is no reason why they should not continue with their completely unsafe practices. (Apparently they don't close down restaurants or cafes unless it gets to the point where people have actually died as a result of eating there.)
