Flight of the Conchords confirm TV return in 2018

But it's not in the form of their much-loved cult HBO comedy. Instead, it'll show starring Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie might be back in 2018 in the form of an hour-long special

As we reported earlier in the week, Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement got the internet in a frenzy by suggesting he and Bret McKenzie would be reuniting New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo a capella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo. "We’re going to shoot an hour thing," he teased.

After much speculation, it's revealed that this "hour thing" will take the form of a one-off comedy special to be shot during their “Flight of the Conchords Sing Flight of the Conchords Tour” of the United Kingdom this spring. According to Deadline, the show will be "taped before a live sold-out audience during their UK tour" and will feature "classics and new original songs".

While this isn't the glorious return of their cult HBO sitcom that many of us will have hoped, this news will be solace to all the British Conchords fans who didn't manage to snap up live tickets in time.

Original story (8 Jan, 2018):

The year ahead is looking to be a pretty sunny one for fans of Flight of the Conchords. Not only are Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie bringing "New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo a capella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo" back on the road with a UK arena tour that includes a stop at Glasgow’s Hydro, Clement has also recently hinted that they’ll be a return of their much-loved TV show. “We’ll do something,” he said when asked about a possible Conchords TV reunion at FX's recent Television Critics Association event. “We’re going to film a little something this year… we’re going to shoot an hour thing.”

All very vague, so it’s not entirely clear if this means a full return to the US sitcom they made for HBO, which ran for two brief but joyous seasons, the last of which was broadcast in 2009.

HBO have commented since Clement hinted at the possibility, saying to the AV Club in a statement that “the deals are not fully in place. We’ll hopefully have news soon and will be back in touch.” So it sounds like nothing is set in stone, but a return of Flight of the Conchords' sitcom is a possibility. After waiting nine long years for a small screen return-back, this is a crumb of hope that should cheer lovers of this hilarious duo.
