Electric Boogaloo

International street culture comes to Scotland this week offering up dance, music and street art that's slightly more sophisticated than a 'tongs ya bass' tag done in Sharpie.

Enter Yardworks Festival (6 May), a celebration of international graffiti, street art and design. Over 80 artists will be showcased at the event at Glasgow's SWG3, along with skateboarding and breakdancing, DJ sets, a pop-up paint and prints store, craft beer and street food.

In Edinburgh, Breakin' Convention (5-6 May), one of the world's leading showcases of hip-hop dance, heads to Festival Theatre for a celebration of hip-hop, dance theatre, DJs, graffiti, workshops, freestyling and more. Curated by UK hip-hop pioneer Jonzi D, prepare for exceptional performances ranging from world champion b-boys to cutting edge street dance. You'll see that we’ve come a long way since Electric Boogaloo.

Do not miss this week:

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (35mm)
Glasgow Film Theatre. Fri 5 May, 11pm & Sun 7 May, 4.30pm
This 1992 prequel to David Lynch and Mark Frost's seminal television show deals with the events leading up to the murder of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), the high-school girl who turns up dead in Twin Peaks’ pilot episode. With the show’s revival arriving later this month, there’s no better time to re-immerse yourself in the secret goings-on of this eerie Pacific northwest town.

Mayfesto Festival
Tron Theatre, Glasgow. Tue 9-Wed 31 May, times vary
The vibrant Mayfesto Festival returns this month, bringing a programme of new and engaging theatre to the Tron. One of the highlights looks to be Daphne Oram’s Wonderful World of Sound, which charts the innovations made by Oram, the co-founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and one of the great pioneers of electronic music. Appropriately enough, there’s a live electronic score, which comes courtesy of Anneke Kampman.

West Ward Works, Dundee. Wed 24-Mon 29 May, 10am-5pm
Dundee Design Festival returns to West Ward Works, a former DC Thomson print factory, from the 24-29 May. The festival’s theme of Factory Floor acknowledges a global shift in design practice as designers and makers blend forms of production, mixing craftsmanship and industrial processes. Visit three vast exhibition galleries and enjoy a programme full of screenings, installations, talks, demos and hands-on workshops suitable for all.

Kishi Bashi
Broadcast, Glasgow. Sun 7 May, 7pm | Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh. Mon 8 May, 7pm
Be sure to catch Japanese multi-instrumentalist Kishi Bashi (aka Kaoru Ishibashi) performing blissful trinkets from his third album, Sonderlust, released back in 2016. Along with this solo project, Ishibashi has spent numerous years as part of Jupiter One and Of Montreal, making him more than qualified to tear up your evening.

Gallops
The Hug and Pint, Glasgow. Wed 10 May, 7.30pm
Do your brain a favour this week and snatch a ticket for Wrexham instrumentalists Gallops. The outfit disbanded back in 2013, but are back as a trio with a new LP, Bronze Mystic, that's akin to a cerebral deep tissue massage; relentless thumps, swerving synth and completely OTT percussion. Even in headphones it's fucking wicked, so we're buzzed to hear how its tracks sound live.
