Zap by Anna Docherty | 24 Sep 2015
1. MUSIC | Neu! Reekie!: Edinburgh and Copenhagen
Pilrig St Paul's Church, Edinburgh. 26 Sep, 7pm, £10 (£8) here

Pitching up as part of cultural exchange project City Link Festival – connecting artists in Edinburgh and Copenhagen – the Neu! Reekie! literary merrymakers host a special edition of their spoken word-meets-everything night. Among those representing Scotch soil will be recent LuckyMe signings NAKED (pictured), and a bespoke live art performance from local artist Kevin Harman, while over from Copenhagen is artist Peter Voss-Knude, Copenhagen-living Estonian saxophonist Faust, and more. Plus, see below to win tickets and supper!
2. FILM | Arcade Fire: The Reflektor Tapes
GFT, Glasgow. 25-27 Sep, various times, £8.50 (£7) here

The GFT host a weekend of screenings of Sundance award-winning director Kahlil Joseph's The Reflektor Tapes – charting the creative process of Arcade Fire's fourth LP Reflektor (which you can read our thoughts on here), capturing the band in Jamaica, recording in Montreal, and playing an impromptu gig in a Haitian hotel, before taking to the road for the Reflektor live tour. The Friday screening will be preceded by Arcade Fire collaborator Kaveh Nabatian’s hallucinatory journey into the annual Haitian carnival celebrations, Nan Lakou Kanaval.
3. MUSIC | Whirlwind Recordings Mini Fest
Stereo, Glasgow. 28 & 29 Sep,  7pm, from £15 (£10) here

A selection of Scottish-based Whirlwind Recordings artists hole up in Stereo for a two-night takeover – Whirlwind Recordings Mini Fest – presenting music from their previous/upcoming releases, among them Glasgow saxophonist/composer Konrad Wiszniewsk, Ryan Quigley and his live band quartet, and Whirlwind’s own Michael Janisch (pictured) presenting his new six-piece Paradigm Shift. Tickets include a 15-track sampler album.
4. FOOD | Queen of Tarts
TB3 Warehouse, Edinburgh. 27 Sep, 1pm, £10 deposit here

If you missed her sold-out return to the world of tea-partying last weekend, then ne'er fear – pop-up tea lady extraordinaire Queen of Tarts returns this weekend for another indulgent 10-course high tea of sweet and savoury treats, relocating from her homely Edinburgh parlour (it was literally her home) to the suitably cool warehouse surrounds of TB3 down't Leith (ogle it here). All eyes on the Facebook page for the menu being revealed in the next few days.
5. BOOKS | Janice Galloway
The Mitchell Library, Glasgow. 29 Sep, 6.30pm, £6 here

Having appeared at last month's Edinburgh International Book Festival, and interviewed in our bumper festival issue (read the online version of that here), Scottish author Janice Galloway takes to Glasgow's Mitchell Theatre for a special Aye Write! Presents... evening, talking about her first short story collection since 2009, Jellyfish, exploring love, sex, and parenthood in her irresistibly honest way. And yes, the first story in the collection does contain jellyfish.
6. CLUBS | The Flying Duck's 8th Birthday
The Flying Duck, Glasgow. 26 Sep, noon-4am, free

Glasgow elder The Flying Duck keeps it as delightfully irreverent as ever for its 8th birthday bash, hosting a day-long programme of celebrations – kicking off with the annual daytime Vegan Fete, before marking sundown with the reveal of a giant birthday cake-shaped stage 'pon which US drone-rock-noise collective PC Worship will play, alongside the Enjoyable Moment and TYCI DJs, plus party games, karaoke, and the joys/perils of a 4am license.
7. COMEDY | Daniel Sloss
Gardyne Theatre, Dundee. 26 Sep, 7.30pm, £14.50 here

Fresh (or, y'know, pure knackered) from a month-long stint at Edinburgh's Fringe festival during August, young Fife comic Daniel Sloss – who did his two-year apprenticeship under Frankie Boyle, hence the oft-morbid material – returns to the live stage with his latest show, Dark, titled in reference to the very term he's sick of people labeling his comedy as. Also playing Glasgow and Edinburgh's The Stand later in the week (27 & 30 Sep, respectively: details here).
8. FILM | Ocean Film Festival
Festival Theatre, Edinburgh. 26 Sep, 7.30pm, £13.50 here

Originally birthed in Australia, the Ocean Film Festival returns to the UK for its now annual autumn tour, making its only Scottish stop-off at Edinburgh's Festival Theatre – taking in a batch of ocean-themed films from independent filmmakers and ocean enthusiasts pooled from across the globe, including mini documentary of, er, mini surfer, six-year-old Quincy Symonds (pictured), A Small Surfer: get a sneak peek at that here.
9. ART | Polar Twins
The Biscuit Factory, Edinburgh. Opens 24 Sep, noon-6pm, free

Following its open studios weekender earlier in the month, the LeithLate troops pop up again with a showcase exhibition at new creative hub The Biscuit Factory – Polar Twins – again marking the fruits of the artist exchange between Copenhagen and Edinburgh for City Link Festival (see also Neu! Reekie! at pick one), with Kevin Harman and Jamie Johnson among the artists representing Scotland. Opening night, 24 Sep, 6-9pm.
10. FOOD | Southside Street Food Showdown
The Glad Cafe, Glasgow. 25 & 26 Sep, 6.30pm/8.30pm, £5 booking here

Returning for another live food fight to the grisly death (or, y'know, a four course street food tasting menu with civilised voting for your favourite dishes), this weekend's Southside Street Food Showdown sees event favourites Babu Bombay Street Kitchen and their West Indian fare go head-to-head with a brand new contender, Ugly Burger (whose burgers are actually surprisingly ugly: see here), with the winning dish announced after each sitting.
