Right then, it's high time we all got a hit of high-concentrate art, and the timing couldn't be more perfect.Edinburgh Art Festival rolls back in to town this week from 27 Jul bringing a freakin' huge programme of original commissions, pop-up events and exhibitions, partner exhibitions, art lates and more to locations across the city. If you're wondering where the fresh hell to start, our honourable Art Editor has selected his top five favourites as part of our wider Top Picks of the Festival. Let it be your guide and go see something belting.

Inter #10: Ela Orleans

Sheer Mag

This week Philadelphia-based five-piece Sheer Mag are brought to you courtesy of Freakender and Mono, with support from Glasgow punks Anxiety, and, thanks to a lovely 2am licence, there'll be DJs playing until late. Image: Marie Lin

Dunkirk on 70mm
Filmhouse, Edinburgh, 21 Jul-2 Aug, times and prices vary
Steady your stiff upper lip, Christopher Nolan’s epic war drama Dunkirk hits cinemas this month, and Filmhouse are set to host some glorious 70mm screenings. The film, the tenth from the Interstellar andMemento director, will tell the story of Operation Dynamo, which saw the rescue of 400,000 Allied troops who were surrounded by Nazis soldiers and stranded in the French beach town during World War II.

Susie Leiper: One Never Quite Knows the Mountain...

This week's your last chance to catch a new exhibition from Susie Leiper who, incidentally, was the masterful hand behind the secretary hand calligraphy on RBS' new polymer fivers. Fitting, really, if you're aware of Leiper's ongoing creative engagement with The Living Mountain by Nan Shepherd, who was featured on the reverse of the note. She creates large-scale canvas paintings, smaller paintings on found wood and silver pointminiature tablets, all inspired by this iconic text. Image courtesy of Susie Leiper

Whether he is exhibiting in a gallery, performing at an underground music festival or collaborating with the likes of The Aphex Twin and Russell Haswell, artist Florian Hecker defies simple classification. Synopsis, specially developed for Tramway’s starkly industrial main gallery space, is one of his most ambitious sound installations yet. Experience it before it closes at the end of the month.

Independent Record Label Market

Vinyl admirers, get excited. This week 23rd Precinct Music join forces with the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) and 57 Degrees North to bring their inaugural Independent Record Label Market to Glasgow's Barras Art and Design Centre. All kinds of independent music traders will be in attendance, touting their musical wares and making pals. What's not to like?

Heverlee
The New Waverley Arches, Edinburgh. 21-23 Jul, times vary
All this culture business is kinda thirsty work, which is why we're relieved to hear that Heverlee is stepping up to create a blissful three-day Belgian beergarden. They'll be bringing in Firecracker Recordings for a microfestival ft. Charlie Bones, Linkwood and LuckyMe’s Éclair Fifi; and The Pitt will be on the scran duties (we've heard rumours of moules-frites, steak-frites, carbonade flamande and Belgian waffles). There'll also be street art, projections from KinoKlub, film screenings and more.

iNCEPT Summer Special
SWG3, Glasgow. Sat 22 Jul, 5pm
This summer party from the iNCEPT crew brings together a tough cast of techno artists for a ten hour music marathon. Headlined by German techno producer Johannes Heil (who will be playing live), the line-up also features Kim Ann Foxman, Hans Bouffmyhre as Secluded, Lex Gorrie, Linsday Green and more.
