From gigs, plays and exhibitions to spoken word and pop up cake shops, we give you the insider's guide to things to do in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee every Thursday morning.

Record Store Day 2016

16 Apr, all day in various venues countrywide

RSD is here! This Saturday record shops everywhere explode into a flurry of gigs, food, booze and the reassuring thought that we're able to hold onto the treasures of non-digital existence if we make an effort. Particular mention goes to events on at VoxBox and Love Music, but read our guide to RSD 2016 to get the lowdown. G'wan, go spend your dollar on some vinyl – who needs Sainsbo's tortellini when you've got your mits on a specially released Alan Partridge record? Image: Gavin Rutherford

Right Now
Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh. 19 Apr-7 May, 7.30pm (matinees available)

If you like your plays unspeakably tense and thoroughly sexy, this is for you. Written by Quebecois playwright Catherine-Anne Toupin, Right Now is a Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf-esque series of expositions, twists and stomach turns, set in the home of a 'normal' couple whose lives change drastically on meeting their neighbours. It's been met with impressive acclaim, and was directed by former Royal Shakespeare Company Artistic Director Sir Michael Boyd.

Beach Baby
Stereo, Glasgow. 19 Apr, 7pm

Meet Beach Baby, a four-piece from Dorset / Athens. Influenced by everyone from The Cure to Nirvana, they’re an exhilarating twine of post-punk, shoegaze and sunny harmonies – everything The Vaccines should have been but kinda sorta weren’t. This is their first headline tour after spending February supporting Sundara Karma. Get your tickets here.

The Bashment and Dancehall Carnival
Studio 24, Edinburgh. 15 Apr, 11pm

Demand for a regular reggaeton and dancehall night reached fever pitch after Bongo hosted a sweat-fest of a carnival in February. The Carnival is now set to return, just bigger and better (but hopefully no sweatier) under the roof of Studio 24. Dancehall queen Lady Chann (pictured) takes the lead on the decks, and there'll be steel drummers and dancers aplenty to set you up for a ridiculously fun night.

Live Tinder Experience from Cradle to Grave! Why Wait?
Avant Garde Bar, Gladgow. 15 Apr, 8pm

Overwhelmed by the volume of options at Glasgow International? You've three options. Run, read The Skinny's guide to this week's art, or go wild and attend something batshit. We suggest combining options #2 and #3 by attending Chateaux Double Wide's Live Tinder Experience – expect makeovers, matchmakings, marriages and adoptions. Best prepare yourself by reading of The Skinny's very own Tinder experiment, conducted back in Feb. What could go wrong?

Scottish Aeropress Championship
Summerhall, Edinburgh. 21 Apr, 6.30pm

Battle of the coffee titans commences at Summerhall as the Scottish Aeropress Championship returns, scouting out the fairest Aeropresser of them all, who'll go on to represent Scotland at the World Championships in Dublin on June 23. There'll be music from Edinburgh's Supermoon, snacks from Jones & Son Bespoke BBQ, doughnuts from Twelve Triangles, cold-brews from Brew Lab (pictured) and 'coffee beer' from Barney's and Steampunk Coffee.

Skiddlywup
The Stand, Edinburgh. 17 Apr, 8.30pm
The Stand, Glasgow. 18 Apr, 8.30pm

Irish exports and talented jokesmiths Foil Arms & Hog will be nipping across to the central belt this month, giving you a prime opportunity to catch their newest show Skiddlywup in both Edinburgh and Glasgow's Stand outposts. They sold out relentlessly at the Fringe last year, so it’s worth catching them before August while you can still get a seat.

Dead By Dawn Film Festival
Filmhouse, Edinburgh. 21-24 Apr, times vary

The UK’s longest-running horror film festival Dead By Dawn returns, screening everything from indie previews to old classics and shorts. Check out the Dead by Dawn website for latest announcements about line-ups (and for a delightfully pedantic guide to conducting yourself at a film fest). Stamina and cash permitting, you can buy a weekend pass to the whole event, but scaredy-cats can also buy individual tickets to particular films, too.

Twin Peaks
Stereo, Glasgow. 16 Apr, 7pm

Ragtag band of garage rockers Twin Peaks bring a set to Glasgow's Stereo ahead of the May release of album Down In Heaven. They were bookmarked in this month's Gig Highlights for their 'sanguine duuude rock' – absolutely perfect soundtrack to your Saturday if the sun chooses to grace Glasgow this weekend (and a decent shout if it's pissing down, too). Get your tickets here. Photo: Daniel Topete

Edinburgh Beer Festival
Stewart Brewery, Loanhead. 16 Apr, 3pm

We imagine you'll need little convincing with this one, what with it being a FESTIVAL of BEER and all. But no, really – with five collaboration beers on offer (including The Skinny’s very own grapefruity Hop Off The Press), local food trucks bringing bespoke spreads for your delectation and live music, it is, as they say, a no-brainer.
